Q & A: RV Covers, Mirrors and Lighting Products

Q. I’m looking to purchase an RV cover and find there is a big choice of products. I use my motorhome quite a bit during fall and winter months for hunting and ice fishing. What’s going to be the best material to stand up to heavy rain and snow? Any suggestions?

A. For your use, you will need a product that is easily removed — possibly with a zippered door opening — so that you can pack and unpack your unit without total removal of the cover. We find that covers with breathable fabric are the best suited for covering recreational vehicles. This prevents the greenhouse effect. As to the type of fabric that you need, we find that products with armor weave are strong, yet soft enough to protect the RV’s finish.

Q. I just bought a new truck to pull our fifth-wheel, but it doesn’t have mirrors that give me enough coverage. I’ve seen the clip-on mirrors. Do they work? Is there something better out there?

A. There are two different types of mirrors that will attach to the existing mirror of your truck: the rubber strap clip-on mirror and the slide-over mirror. The slide-over mirror will give a more custom look and fit. These mirrors also tend to vibrate less than the rubber strap version.

Q. I’m looking at replacing some lights on my RV. What are your thoughts or experiences with LED (light-emitting diode) products? Are there really any proven advantages?

A. LED lighting will draw less power and be a brighter alternative to the standard bulb.
